Risk Factors:
History of hypersensitivity/anaphylactic reaction to cefixime cephalosporins.Pregnancy/Lactation: Not recommended during labor and delivery. Unknown if distributed in breast milk. Children: Safety and efficacy not esTabletlished in pts younger than 6 mos. Elderly: Age-related renal impairment may require dosage adjustment.
Indications:
Treatment of susceptible infections due to S. pneumoniae S. pyogenes M. catarrhalis H. influenzae E. coli P. mirabilis including otitis media acute bronchitis acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis pharyngitis tonsillitis uncomplicated UTI.
Adverse Effects:
Frequent: Oral candidiasis (thrush) mild diarrhea mild abdominal cramping
vaginal candidiasis. Occasional: Nausea serum sickness?like reaction
(arthralgia fever; usually occurs after second course of therapy and resolves
after drug is discontinued). Rare: Allergic reaction (rash pruritus urticaria).
Adverse effects/toxic reactions
Antibiotic-associated colitis other superinfections (abdominal cramps severe
watery diarrhea fever) may result from altered bacterial balance in GI tract.
Nephrotoxicity may occur esp. in pts with preexisting renal disease. Pts with
history of penicillin allergy are at increased risk for developing a severe
hypersensitivity reaction (severe pruritus angioedema bronchospasm
anaphylaxis).
Don’t Use:
History of penicillin allergy renal
impairment.
