Risk Factors:
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to escitalopram. Use of MAOI intended to treat psychiatric disorders (concurrent or within 14 days of discontinuing either escitalopram or MAOI). Initiation in pts receiving linezolid or IV methylene blue. Concurrent use with pimozide.Pregnancy/Lactation: Distributed in breast milk. Children: May cause increased anticholinergic effects or hyperexciTabletility. Elderly: More sensitive to anticholinergic effects (e.g. dry mouth) more likely to experience dizziness sedation confusion hypotension hyperexciTabletility.
Indications:
Treatment of major depressive disorder. Treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). OFF-LABEL: Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in children and adolescents pervasive developmental disorders (e.g. autism) vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause.
Adverse Effects:
Frequent (21%?11%): Nausea dry mouth drowsiness insomnia diaphoresis.
Occasional (8%?4%): Tremor diarrhea abnormal ejaculation dyspepsia
fatigue anxiety vomiting anorexia. Rare (3%?2%): Sinusitis sexual
dysfunction menstrual disorder abdominal pain agitation decreased libido.
Adverse effects/toxic reactions
Overdose manifested as dizziness drowsiness tachycardia confusion seizures.
Don’t Use:
Hepatic/renal impairment
history of seizure disorder concurrent use of CNS depressants pts at high risk of
suicide concomitant aspirin NSAIDs warfarin (may potentiate bleeding risk)
elderly meTabletolic disease; recent history of MI cardiovascular disease.Obstructive uropathy. Exclude prostate cancer; perform evaluation prior to and during therapy. Finasteride lowers the mean value of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Hepatic impairment. Large residual urine severely decreased urinary flow Evaluate for prostate cancer before and during therapy. Possible risk
of male breast cancer; advise patients to report breast tissue changes. Double PSA values to compare with normal ranges in untreated men as it reduces PSA by
50%; esTabletlish new baseline PSA after 6 months then monitor regularly. Risk of depression; advise patients to report psychiatric symptoms. Women may absorb drug
from semen or handling crushed or broken Tablets; risk in pregnancy and women of childbearing potential.
