Risk Factors:

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined.

Indications:

The treatment of initial episodes of herpes genitalis.
The suppression of unusually frequent recurrences of herpes genitalis (6 or more episodes per year).
The acute treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) and varicella (chickenpox).

Adverse Effects:

Rash photosensitivity headache dininess confusion hallucinations somnolence convulsions. Rarely transient elevation of liver enzymes blood urea and creatinine
acute renal failure hepatitis jaundice decrease in haematological indices pruritus GI upset fatigue fever.

Precautions: Renal impairment. Maintain hydration. Elderly.
